Activity DescriptionInterview two parents of young children who are of distinctly different cultural groups or one of the parents may have a child with a diagnosed or suspected disability. (Please consider that the disability could be physical, emotional, or a learning disability.) Ask questions about the family structure, cultural background, and school experiences with their children, etc. Reflect upon the interview and consider the following questions: • How were the parents' answers different? How were they alike? • Which sources of information does the adult use to answer these questions? For example, does this adult rely on research? On systematic observation? On personal opinion? • To what degree do answers reflect family background, culture, or other life experiences? For example, does this adult rely on beliefs passed down from parents or other family members? Does this adult refer to conditions in the neighborhood or community that influences thinking about children? • What can you conclude about cultural differences in parenting beliefs and practices? In your summary be sure to tie in information from the text and the articles to support your statements. Answer the questions and make statements about how culture influences parenting and practices.
