Activity ObjectiveTo understand what a cognate language is and explore the cognate languages to English.
Activity DescriptionCandidates will read chapter 4 in their textbook A Biography of the English Language and identify the language family to which English belongs. Candidates will then identify the sister languages to English and search for cognate words within this language family to identify similarities and differences between the words.

Activity ObjectiveTo use phonetics/phonology principles in the analysis of English language samples.
Activity DescriptionCandidates will transcribe English samples from Old English and modern English in order to gain a picture of how English phonology has changed over time. Candidates will also analyze the transcriptions for similarities and differences between OE and ME.
